According to TPI, a pain-free golf swing relies on five physical skills. If you are missing even one, your game and your body will pay the price.

1. Core control: keeping your spine steady
Your core muscles protect your lower back from absorbing the twist of your swing. Good core control gives you a stable platform to transfer energy from the ground up into the ball.

2. Moving your hips without your shoulders
On the downswing, your hips need to clear out of the way first while your upper body stays coiled and ready to explode.

3. Turning your shoulders while your hips stay put
This creates a powerful “coil” during your backswing. Without it, your whole body moves as one stiff block, destroying your distance.

4. Staying bent over the ball
If you lack the hip and ankle mobility to hold your posture, you will stand up early (early extension), leading to thinned shots and an aching lower back.

5. Setting and releasing the club
If your wrists are stiff or weak, you will likely let go of the club too early, losing your clubhead speed before you ever touch the ball.

The bottom line
If you are struggling with inconsistency while you play or soreness after you play, stop blaming your equipment. A quick physical screen can pinpoint which of these 5 skills you’re missing. Fix your body and your swing will follow.
