⭐️NATIONAL OT MONTH⭐️

Meet Allison, a pediatric OT at our Rudolphtown clinic.

What’s always in your OT bag?
- A visual fixation wand to screen visual tracking, fixation, ocular movement and convergence. Good eye movement control, focus at near, and alignment are important when addressing reading and writing skills.

What inspired you to become an occupational therapist?
- My senior year of high school I was involved in a car accident breaking multiple bones. I spent some time in a rehabilitation unit receiving OT, PT, and ST. While all of my therapists played a big roll in my recovery, it was my OT that helped me regain my independence with daily task. OT was also the most fun.

Early bird sessions or afternoon treatments?
- I am definitely a big fan of morning treatment sessions. I often have kids who are referred to me due to their visual deficits, which are impacting handwriting, and self care skills. My sessions are most productive when they occur before a child has visually and cognitively fatigued after a full day of school/play.

Meet Merritt, a COTA at our St. B clinic.

What’s one thing people would be surprised to learn about your job?
- I spend an inordinate amount of time sitting on the floor!

Can you share a moment when you saw a patient gain independence?
- The first time a kiddo successfully ties their shoelaces is a magical moment! This is such a difficult skill for kids to master, and takes a ton of practice. It is a privilege to witness the moment it all comes together for them and they experience the gratification and sense of accomplishment that only comes from hard work and perseverance.

What’s a common misconception about occupational therapy?
- That pediatric OT is “just playing.” We do play and have fun! I use purposeful play to work on fine motor skills, sensory processing, social interaction, coordination, and so much more! Being playful and having fun engages kids and encourages participation so we can build foundational skills.

⭐️NATIONAL OT MONTH⭐️

Meet Kellam, an OT who works with adults and pediatrics at our Rudolphtown clinic.

What is the most rewarding part of being an OT?
- The most rewarding part of being an OT is watching patients regain their independence and confidence, especially when they didn’t think it was possible. Helping them surpass their own expectations and achieve their goals is incredibly fulfilling.

What’s a common misconception about being an OT?
- A common one is that we only help people find jobs or do basic daily tasks. Occupational therapy is very skilled and holistic - we address everything from physical rehabilitation and pain to neurological conditions, all to help people live meaningful, independent lives.

If your job had a warning label what would it say?
- This OT restores strength in more ways than one… 😅 Side effects may include improved grip strength, stronger pelvic floors, and accidentally telling your friends to “engage your core” at all times.
